Stone Residence

Chicago, IL

This apartment for art collectors was designed as a gallery for their thoughtfully curated collection. Yet, it was a response not only to the collection but was very much tailored to the individual needs.

The design focusses on creating space for the pieces and spaces in which to appreciate them. It is a gallery in its whole where the furniture was meant to be an artwork in and of itself, but secondary to the 20th century masterworks. In this way the furnishings are part of the architecture, built into the edges as if extensions or outcroppings of the architectural surrounds.

Custom window panels were designed to allow for paintings to occupy spaces in a way that simultaneously enables flexibility. Materials and furnishings were chosen to provide a subtle backdrop and foil to the vivid and bold artwork which defined the space.
