Jyväskylä Music and Arts Center
This project for an art center, concert hall and recital space was positioned between two Saarinen projects, one from his early career, one from later. A primary objective for the program was the keep the site open for fluid access to the park across the street.
We specifically approached the design solution to make sure the large program didn’t present itself as a barrier. To accomplish this, we elevated a large portion of the program to allow for a continuous flow of space between the Saarinen projects, the Performance Art Center and the park. Positioned on a corner site, the edges became porous to provide for this connection while a large light shaft deep inside the building further broke down the mass by allowing for continuity of daylight and proper rendition of the vessel geometries.
