S. R. Crown Hall - Restoration

Illinois Institute of Technology - Chicago, IL

This masterpiece of modern architecture required restoration and renovation after nearly fifty years of continuous use. As both a city of Chicago Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, each element of the project underwent a rigorous team, client and peer review process.

The key approach was to restore many of the building’s original details; satisfying stringent historic preservation requirements and ensuring architectural, landscape and mechanical strategies met sustainability strategies.

The renovation provided solutions to accommodate the increased enrollment, which had grown from 120 students when the school first opened to 450 in 2005 and included the total restoration of the main classroom level, exterior restoration and complete glass replacement, and a repurposing of the lower level.
