Herman Miller National Design Center
Herman Miller began the first of many projects with us to update their image and increase their position as an industry leader. We began at their flagship showroom in the Chicago Merchandise Mart, then expanded to six other cities including Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York to integrate the experience.
A showroom envelope that has remained intact for over 25 years, especially one that has continued to support the leading-edge spatial needs of an industry innovator is unheard of — but for Herman Miller, that’s exactly what we did.
The example of Charles and Ray Eames prompted the design team to concentrate on simple materials, exploring their potential through testing and craft. Deviating from showroom window conventions of the time, the exhibit wall is a 200-foot series of faceted glass panels which form a dynamic crystalline screen, creating layers of space, light, and reflection — with flexibility and openness.
