Hafen City Chicago Square Master Plan

Hamburg, Germany   |   2005

Our master plan for Chicago Square celebrates its unique location in Hamburg. The overall composition of buildings punctuates the termination of the Baakenhafen, while defining and architecturally embracing the square, giving it a sense of scale and enclosure. Lifting the masses of the buildings allows views to the waters beyond from distant vistas throughout the site. It also integrates the interior atrium spaces to the square itself.

A vibrant overpass crosses the rail tracks and the Versmannstrasse, establishing an urban bridge connecting the buildings of East and West Elbbruckenzentrum. The man-made edges of the Baakenhafen, and the freedoms offered by the shipping industry at the water's edge, are reflected in this undulating asymmetrical composition of triangulated geometries.
