Muntu Dance Theater Chicago

Chicago, IL | 2007

A new performance facility for the nationally renowned dance company, Muntu Dance Theater includes a 400-plus-seat performing arts theater, a 100 seat black-box theater, and three rehearsal studios. The project presented unique design challenges including the reuse of existing concrete footings and structural steel.

The performing arts theater maximizes the connection between the dancers and the audience, encouraging a seamless flow of movement between the seating area and stage. This deliberate approach to the design was to engage the audience in the performance and to create a unique space supporting the type of dance that defines the company’s identity.

The glass façade includes large translucent graphics visible during the daytime and revealing the energy of the lobby beyond during evening events. The black-box theater and dance rehearsal spaces are visible through the façade and serve as a reminder of Muntu's contribution to the surrounding neighborhood.
