Hewitt Associates Corporate Headquarters
Lincolnshire, IL | 1988
A forty-two acre oak forest frames the 140,000 square foot campus headquarters of Hewitt Associates, an international employee benefits consulting firm. The trees were considered sacred, and their position determined the location of buildings and parking. The building plan extends three narrow office wings into the forest. First seen through the densely wooded site, the headquarters appears as hovering volumes. The subtleties of the curtain wall are obscured by the natural rhythm of the woods.
The primary functions, efficiently tailored to Hewitt’s needs, became the foundation of the building’s design. As such, the office wings were designed around a standard ten-by-twelve-foot office, yet all corners were left open for shared meeting spaces. The regularity of office areas required that corridors be kept short and take orientation cues from the central four-story skylit atrium which grounds the whole and provides natural light deep into the interior of the space.
