Herman Miller Main Site - Building C1
Zeeland, MI | 2002
Krueck+Sexton approached the renovation of Building C1 as a multi-faceted opportunity to increase usable space within the existing shell and to upgrade a mid-century building with sustainability in mind. In addition, a principal objective of ours was to honor and strengthen the A. Quincy Jones building, a quiet essay in steel and brick expressive of Herman Miller design values.
Years of interior finishes were stripped away to reveal the beauty of the original steel structure. New finishes were minimized and those used were chosen, in part, for their high recycled content. Completely new electrical and mechanical systems, along with high efficiency lighting, reduce energy consumption by 30%.
The project was selected by the National AIA Committee on the Environment and the US Department of Energy as a Top Ten Green Project in 2004.
