Eisenhower Memorial Competition
Washington, DC | 2009
The Eisenhower Memorial Competition’s challenge was to design a memorial befitting of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s achievements as General, President, and World Citizen, while also creating a new paradigm for 21st Century Memorialization in the heart of Washington DC. It does so, in part, through the employment of a number of sustainable design strategies: reuse of collected rainwater, composted planting soils, and sun shades designed for high performance and visual/thermal comfort in multiple seasons.
Inspired by the front porch of Eisenhower’s childhood home in Abilene Kansas, a uniquely American place of shelter and storytelling, the memorial is interpreted as a “civic porch” which provides a ceremonial setting for the great accomplishments of Eisenhower’s epic life.
