Cloud I Apartment
Chicago, IL | 1992
This apartment, in a landmarked Mies van der Rohe tower, extends the architectural ordering principles of the building to the interior. The residence was formed by joining two single bedroom units, exposing structural and mechanical conditions that could have been considered a negative condition. Instead it was used as the genesis of space-modulation in the design. The ceiling was used to sculpture the space through manipulation of varying-height planes. A glass terrazzo floor, white walls and lacquered millwork form an ethereal, cloud-like space.
